Timeline

Selection And Appointment: The staff of the Youth Program are selected and appointed by the Youth Advisor, with input from the Youth Committee and with the advice and approval of the Dean. Youth Program staff are responsible to the Youth Advisor.

Qualifications: The most desirable candidates for this position love and understand teenagers; want to work with youth; and have a demonstrated ability to interact successfully with them. Social maturity and good interpersonal and organizational skills are required. Successful experience as a youth leader, teacher, recreational leader, counselor or parent is useful. Some experience as an Eliot camper is helpful, but not essential. The minimum age requirement is 21 years. (In keeping with the Code of Ethics of Eliot Institute, the purpose of this requirement is to minimize any confusion about role, i.e. youth staff are resources/leaders, not peers.)

General Responsibilities: Under the general supervision of the Youth Advisor, the staff of the Youth Program are responsible for helping plan, implement, and supervise a Youth Program that supports the Mission Statement, the Code of Ethics, and the traditions of Eliot Institute.

Specific Responsibilities: As assigned by the Youth Advisor, staff remain on duty through the end of the final Worship Service and camp check-out.

Assist in planning and implementing Youth Program.

In consultation with the Youth Advisor assist Youth in implementing the following:

A youth Worship ( if desired)

A Youth overnight

Afternoon recreational opportunities

Chaperones, as needed, for late night gatherings

Assist in facilitating Youth’s positive interaction with the entire Eliot community.

Help monitor and encourage behavior by all that is consistent with Eliot standards and Code of Ethics.

* Generally, Youth are between the ages 13-18 and in 9th through 12th grades in school. Exceptions are sometimes made -- in conjunction with Youth Advisor, parents and Children’s Director -- to start Youth later or earlier given individual circumstances and levels of social maturation. Those who are age 18 and still in high school, or who are younger than age 18 and already out of high school, will be included in the youth program. Individuals who are out of high school and who are age 18 or older are expected

Youth Program Staff Time Line

Before Camp:

If you have not done so already, apply for camp. When received, return signed contract and Code of Ethics to Registrar. Undergo Background/Police Check.

Assist in planning and implementing Youth Program.

First Day of Camp:

Assist in setting up youth area

Attend Parent-Youth-Youth Staff orientation meeting

During Camp:

Assist in planning and implementing Youth Program.

In consultation with the Youth Advisor assist Youth in implementing

A youth Worship ( if desired)

A Youth overnight

Afternoon recreational opportunities

Chaperones, as needed, for late night gatherings

Assist in facilitating Youth’s positive interaction with the entire Eliot community.

Help monitor and encourage behavior by all that is consistent with Eliot standards and Code of Ethics.

Last Day of Camp:

Unless notified otherwise, you are to remain on duty through the end of the final Worship Service and camp check-out.

Assist in clean up of youth area and surrounding grounds

After Camp:

If you have any suggestions or comments that would be helpful to the Youth Committee, please write them up and submit them to the Dean or send directly to the Youth Committee.

Guidelines For Overnight:

The chaperone will remain present and awake during his/her shift.

You are not permitted to share bedding -- one body per sleeping bag.

You are not permitted to leave the designated area during the night unless accompanied by a chaperone. The designated area is the Pines meeting room, usually, and outdoors near the front of Pines.

Let sleeping youth lie.(Do not disturb those who are sleeping)

Excessive use of caffeine or other stimulants, especially after midnight, is discouraged.

Normal curfew and noise expectations apply.
