Eliot Institute Camp Chaplain

Selection: The position of Camp Chaplain will be designated by the Eliot Board of Directors with recommendations from Camp Deans. Candidates will make application stating their interest, qualifications and experience of serving in a chaplain or pastoral role.

Qualifications: Chaplain candidates will be effective active listeners, able to be supportive of and witness to another human being’s struggle and knowledgeable of resources and assistance available.

Chaplain candidates will have one of the following professional designations (not necessarily in an order of priority):

1. A Unitarian Universalist parish or community minister in preliminary or final fellowship.

2. Candidate for UU ministry who has completed CPE training and is a member of the UUMA;

3. A UU Minister of Religious Education;

4. A minister in dual fellowship or working to qualify as a UU minister after service in another denomination.

5. A Pastoral Counselor

6. A trained and certified Spiritual Director

General Responsibilities:

The Chaplain will be available to campers to witness and support an individual's struggle or triumph in connecting with their Higher Self at the camp. A Chaplain will be spiritually present to a camper in personal crisis or minister to the camp in the event of a larger crisis. S/he may offer temporary pastoral counsel only and is encouraged to refer a camper to resources in the camper’s home community where appropriate.

Confidentiality:

A Chaplain serves campers in a confidential manner unless for safety reasons s/he deems it necessary and appropriate to consult with the Deans and/or Board Representative after notifying the camper.

Remuneration:

In exchange for serving the camp as stated above, the Chaplain may attend the camp at no cost.
